🪵 Hardwood, Engineered Wood, Laminate and Vinyl

We install all major flooring types. Solid hardwood — oak, maple, walnut, and other domestic and exotic species — installed as nail-down or glue-down depending on the subfloor and application. Engineered hardwood, which offers the look and feel of solid wood with better dimensional stability for basements, concrete slabs, and areas with temperature fluctuation. Laminate flooring for high-traffic areas where durability and ease of maintenance matter. Luxury vinyl plank for moisture-prone areas like basements, laundry rooms, and kitchens where real wood isn't ideal.

We also install tile flooring — porcelain, ceramic, and natural stone — for bathrooms, kitchens, entryways, and mudrooms. If you're remodeling a kitchen or bathroom, the flooring is part of the overall project and coordinated with the rest of the work. For standalone flooring projects, we handle everything from removing the old floor through to the finished surface, including transitions between rooms and any threshold or trim work needed to complete the installation cleanly.

📈 Why Hardwood Flooring Adds Long-Term Value

Hardwood floors are one of the most consistently valued features in residential real estate. Buyers in the Chicago suburbs — especially in communities like Wilmette, Winnetka, Highland Park, and Hinsdale — expect hardwood flooring, and homes without it are often at a disadvantage. Beyond resale value, hardwood floors are durable, easy to clean, and can be refinished multiple times over their lifespan rather than replaced.

Engineered hardwood offers a similar visual result at a lower price point and with broader application — it can go over concrete slabs and radiant heat systems where solid hardwood cannot. For homeowners weighing the two, the decision often comes down to the subfloor conditions and the room's environment. Stefan will assess your space and recommend which option makes the most sense for your home and budget.

💲 How Much Does Hardwood Floor Installation Cost in Chicago?

Flooring installation costs depend on the material, the square footage, the subfloor condition, and the complexity of the layout. Solid hardwood typically costs more than engineered wood, laminate, or LVP, but it also lasts longer and can be refinished repeatedly. The subfloor matters significantly — a clean, level subfloor is a straightforward installation, while an uneven concrete slab or a subfloor with moisture issues requires preparation work that adds to the cost.

We provide a written estimate after visiting your home and assessing the floors. This includes measuring the space, checking the subfloor condition, discussing material options, and identifying any complications (height transitions between rooms, moisture, existing floor removal). One of our clients needed a complex height mismatch resolved between rooms — we figured out a solution that looked clean and functioned properly. That attention to detail is standard on every flooring project.

🔍 Hardwood vs Engineered Hardwood: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Solid hardwood is milled from a single piece of wood and can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its life — easily 50 to 100 years with proper care. It's the traditional choice for main living areas, bedrooms, and hallways. The drawback is sensitivity to moisture and temperature changes: solid hardwood can expand, contract, cup, or gap in environments with high humidity or over concrete slabs. It's typically not recommended for basements or below-grade installations.

Engineered hardwood has a real wood veneer over a plywood or composite core, giving it the same appearance as solid hardwood with greater dimensional stability. It can be installed over concrete, over radiant heat, and in below-grade spaces where solid wood would be risky. Most engineered products can be refinished at least once, and higher-end options with thicker wear layers can be refinished multiple times. For most homeowners, the visual difference between the two is negligible — the choice comes down to the installation environment and long-term plans for the space.

🔧 Subfloor Prep, Installation and Finishing

Every flooring installation starts with subfloor assessment. We check for levelness, moisture content, structural integrity, and any existing damage. If the subfloor needs leveling compound, moisture barriers, or repairs, that's handled before any flooring goes down. Skipping subfloor prep is how floors end up with squeaks, gaps, and premature wear — we don't take shortcuts here.

Installation follows the manufacturer's specifications for the chosen material — acclimation time, fastener type and pattern, expansion gaps, and adhesive where required. Transitions between rooms and flooring types are finished with appropriate moldings and thresholds. Once installed, site-finished hardwood gets sanded, stained (if specified), and sealed with multiple coats of polyurethane. Pre-finished flooring is ready to use immediately after installation. We clean up completely and do a final walkthrough to make sure everything meets your expectations.
